DYEING

THE DYER'S GARDEN
Instructor: Dagmar Klos

It's time to start thinking about your garden. Let's talk about plants that you can enjoy in your garden and on your yarn or fabric. The plants can be annuals, biennials, or perennials – marigolds, weld, black-eyed susans to name but a few. Dyed samples will be presented as well as books that you peruse. A bibliography will be provided. Come and learn how the beauty of summer colors can last all year long. This lecture is open to all levels.

Tuesday: April 29; 7 – 9 PM • Kavanagh Bldg. Surface Design Studio

TIE-DYE BASICS
Instructor: Dagmar Klos

In shibori or tie-dye, fabric is manipulated by stitching, binding, folding and clamping, or wrapping around a pole. The fabric is then dyed or discharged and dried. When opened the fabric reveals patterns that have a characteristic "soft edge." Participants will create a set of samples of the different techniques. Dyeing will be done in indigo and/or fiber reactive dyes. Discharge dyeing (removing of color) will also be done. This class is open to all levels.

Supplies: Bring to class note-taking supplies, sewing needles, a spool of upholstery thread (100% nylon), scissors, a water erasable fabric marking pen, thimble, apron (or wear old clothes), rubber gloves, and plastic bucket. Questions? Contact instructor. [IS THERE AN EMAIL OR PH NO?]

Recommended Texts: Shibori, The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resisit Dyeing by Yoshiko Wada, Mary Kellog Rice, and Jane Barton, and Shibori by Karren K. Brito, The Dyer's Companion by Dagmar Klos.
