METALS
TECHNIQUE STEW, LEFTOVERS
Instructor: Neil Anderson
In this five week class for first time and returning
students, you will incorporate different techniques to create one or
two or more projects
utilizing two or more of the following processes: soldering fabrication,
lost wax casting, textural surface design, etching, or forging. Students
will work in non-ferrous metals possibly using stones, glass, or found
objects as integral elements, if desired. Returning students can continue
with unfinished projects.
First time students will construct a two layer
silver band ring as an initial project to learn elements of piercing,
texturing, and solder fabrication.
Supplies: Bring lots of ideas, sketchbooks,
if you have your own tools, please bring them. We have basic tools
to loan for new students
Recommended Text: The Complete Metalsmith by Tim
McCreight. Other jewelry and metalsmithing books will be introduced for
inspiration and technical assistance.

JEWELRY DESIGNS IN SILVER
Instructor: Claudia Engel-Rush
This class will explore working with silver to create
unique pieces. Fabrication as well
as cuttlefish casting will be introduced. Fabrication includes working
with silver in the form of sheets and wire which is manipulated to create
pieces. Casting with cuttlefish bone is done by carving into the bone
and pouring molten silver into it. Your ideas can take you into areas
of jewelry, small sculptures, tiny boxes and more. This class will meet
six times.
Supplies: Please bring a sketchbook and any metalsmithing
tools you may have.

previous classes. This class will cover working with silver, fabrication
and casting. This class will meet four times.

KNIFE FORGING – METAL
WORKING
Instructor: Dan Caldwell
In
this class you will make a forged high carbon steel knife with decorative
exotic wood or antler handle. This class is designed to be challenging
to the beginner as well as the intermediate Blacksmith/ Bladesmith. Learn
the basic tools, techniques and heat treating used in Bladesmithing,
using forge, anvil and hammers. In this 3 day Saturday class, we will
explore different types of forging processes used to produce functional
knives, chisels and axes. We will be looking at some advanced bladesmithing
process such as Damascus (layered steel) heat treating/hardening.
Prerequisites: Prior blacksmithing, metal forging classes or the instructors consent
This class requires some physical activity. Only people with good wrist,
arm and leg function should attend.
Supplies: Bring to class a favorite
hammer if you have one, pair of leather work gloves, safety glasses,
comfortable leather work-shoes or boots (no sandals), cotton jeans or
pants (no sweats or cuffed pants), note taking materials, water bottle
and bag lunch. You will be getting dirty so dress appropriately.

COPPER & BRASS FORGING
Instructor: Dan Caldwell
Learn the basic tools
and techniques of Copper Smithing, as wells some more advanced processes
and materials. In this one-day workshop we will explore different types
of metal working processes used to produce decorative and functional
items. Work will focus on organic shapes such as leaves and containers
in brass and copper. Some possible projects will include copper or brass
plates, bowls, bracelets, necklaces, candleholders, and outdoor ornaments.
This class requires hammering and other vigorous physical
activity. Only adults with good wrist, arm, shoulder and leg function
should attend.
Very long hair should be braided or worn back in a ponytail.
Who should
attend: Any one from previous blacksmith, copper/metal working classes.
Students who have had some metal craft working experience, such as a
jewelry class.
Bring to class a pair of leather work gloves, safety
glasses are a must, comfortable leather work-shoes or boots (no sandals),
cotton
jeans or long pants (No shorts, sweats, cuffed pants, Nylon or polyester
any thing), note taking materials, water bottle, and bag lunch. You will
be getting dirty so dress appropriately. All other supplies and materials
will be provided.
