Cheryl Mahowald

CHERYL MAHOWALD

"Paper was invented over 2000 years ago. My obsession with handmade paper began ten years ago. I was drawn to the sensory aspect and 'zen-like' quality of making paper by hand. I am a gardener and the idea of using plant fibers grown and harvested from my own yard appealed to me. Crafting a sheet of paper is like cooking a gourmet meal. The care and time invested provide a textural and visual feast. It is very satisfying, an art in itself."She hollds a B.A. from Iowa State University and has worked in the field of Art and Design since 1982. For the past five years, I have been teaching at The DuPage Art League, local schools, and other venues. I am delighted to be teaching at The Fine Line. My work has won awards and been exhibited in area galleries. I am a partner in Prairie Spirit Papers, a member of Friends of Dard Hunter, the DuPage Art League and the Collage Sisthars. Ann Schuster

ANN SCHUSTER

Ann's interest in art began in 1988 with a seminar on "Better Mental Health for Women" put on by the local hospital. She was introduced to the Elgin Community College Art Department and subsequently an art instructor from Phoenix who opened the door to watercolors. She says, "I chose to walk through that door into the world of transparent watercolors and have never turned back." Ann has exhibited in many outdoor and indoor shows and has had her work in the gift gallery at Nordstroms.

Rosemary Smillie

ROSEMARY SMILLIE

Rosemary is a full time free lance artist of wall hangings in brass and paintings in oil, watercolor and pastel. She has signature status in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. A commercial art graduate, she has furthered her education in the Fine Arts. Rosemary's work has hung in the House of Representatives, Washington D.C., private and corporate collections in Texas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, California as well as England and Russia. Two of her large brass wall pieces are hung at the Math and Science Academy, Aurora, Illinois. Although she works in multi-mediums, she particularly enjoys the freedom of watercolor. Beginning with an abstraction of colors, she develops shapes and spaces until the finished painting materializes... a transposing of images from the subconscious to the paper. See her work at www.egos4.com.

ROSALIE VASS

Vass grew up in the glacier area of Wisconsin. Her hometown was small and her roaming range quite large. She was fascinated by the changes in the sky and the colors of the seasons. She watched the cows and sheep graze in the pastures and all of life seemed amazingly slow and multi-colored. She was content to scan her environment to find the colors, textures, moods, and compositions that she would later paint.

Her paintings burst with the reflections and experiences of her childhood adventures and adult travel. The desert, the ocean, the mountains and the architecture of her world travel all find a place in her work; never as one scene from one location but a blenderful of images from many times and places. She has painted flocks of sheep, herds of cows, choirs of angels, and countless towns, cities, palaces, bridges, and cemeteries. Her paintings are like random pages out of the diary of her life; come experience the joy of her art.

SHARON SYCHTA

As a sculptor, Sharon see her world in three dimensions. This vision shapes my thoughts and my work. Sharon creates three dimensional reality by manipulating a variety of media and found objects. Her work is personal, shaped by impressions of the world around her and molded by her hands. Each new beginning is a challenge, informed by her senses and referenced by the natural world.

Although Sharon started out many years ago creating hand built and wheel thrown pottery, she continued to evolve her methods and the media she uses to shape my sculptures. Sharon has a passion for a variety of sizes. She has no boundaries and nothing is too small or too large.

Sharon graduated from North Central College with a degree in Marketing, with an emphasis on Fine Arts. She has continued her education with classes taught by professional artists and has been juried into several group shows. Sharon enjoys teaching children and adults the skills she has acquired over the years and appreciates the opportunity to pass on her passion for art to the younger generation.
